    Call for papers.

Submission deadline for PebbleBash 2018 extended to Friday, 13th April 2018

The theme of this year’s conference is Scaling-up, reflecting the growing maturity of practice with portfolios, portfolio-inspired learning and teaching, and the platforms that support these approaches. Organisations are also identifying a growing list of challenges to which technologies like ours seem to provide an effective answer.

We are seeking submissions that talk to the transition from small scale, often single-point use of PebblePad to uses which are more fully-integrated into the wider learning experience. We are particularly interested in showcasing and celebrating successful program-wide or institution-wide projects. Like all previous ‘Bashes there will be a strong focus on pedagogy, especially on learning and assessment design. But it is impossible to really scale up without senior stakeholder involvement, strategic planning, good project management, and having carefully thought through integrations with other institutional systems – so we would like to include presentations which consider ideas, challenges and successes from these perspectives. Submissions might consider:

  • Sectoral, institutional, or program drivers for scaling up
  • Engaging others in the scaling up challenge e.g. management, external assessors, employers, IT
  • The benefits or affordances of scaling up
  • Planning, designing and/or delivering PebblePad projects ‘at scale’

Of course, we know that scaling up means different things to different people in different contexts. We are also aware that some people are doing remarkable work at smaller scale and we do want to provide space in the programme to showcase some of this work. Submissions are invited for the following types of presentations:

  • Case Study
  • Ignite Presentation (20/20)
  • Short Innovative Interactive Workshop
  • Propositional Paper

In addition, we are open to suggestions for other types of presentation formats! If you have ideas you would like to explore with us please email us at conference@pebblepad.com.

Paper Formats

Case Study

Case studies typically identify an issue or problem, describe the curriculum solution or intervention, and report the results together with supporting evidence. The concluding section(s) consider next steps and suggest how others might adopt or adapt the experience. The overarching aim of the case study is for others to be able to understand, learn from, and build on the experiences of the author in their own context. All accepted case studies will be included in the edited conference proceedings book.

Case studies are to be submitted using the template provided. They should aim for around 2000 words.

Ignite Presentation

Pecha Kucha, lightning, or 20/20 style presentations are becoming an increasing popular presentation format. They are less formal than the case study or propositional paper, though they do demand thoughtful preparation as successful presenters will be required to tell their story in 20 slides each lasting exactly 20 seconds. These presentations are designed to be concise and fast-paced and aim to prompt further discussion afterwards.

Whilst the time to present is limited, this is compensated for by the opportunity to present to the entire conference audience. A dedicated facilitator will assist successful authors in the preparation and management of the presentations and posters.

Ignite Presentation proposals must be submitted using the template provided. The proposal is to be a maximum of 300 words.

Short Innovative Interactive Workshop

Proposals are invited for innovative workshops that are fully interactive and not just discussion based. This is to be a true activity session where participants are involved in one or more tasks for the duration of the workshop – ie. not a presentation by facilitators followed by a discussion. Proposals that include creative activities other than small group discussions are encouraged. Workshops will be around 45 minutes duration.

Innovative Interactive Workshop proposals must be submitted using the template provided. The proposal is to be a maximum of 300 words.

Propositional Paper

Submissions of this kind will likely draw upon diverse practice to enable authors to present new ideas and theories to the PebblePad (and wider) community. Possible examples might include the development of curriculum models; definitional propositions around PebblePad, portfolios or personal learning; or papers that consider the relationship between PebblePad and other learning systems.

The expectation is that propositional papers draw upon extant theory to situate the new ideas within a wider body of learning. Whilst the threshold for acceptance will be lower than might be experienced in a peer review journal we anticipate that little additional work might be required to make the paper publishable elsewhere (eg. IJeP). Authors of propositional papers might consider PebbleBash as an opportunity to test their ideas and might subsequently choose to draw upon members of the PebblePad community, or PebblePad team, to assist in further developing the paper.

All accepted propositional papers will be included in the edited conference proceedings book.

Propositional papers must follow the guidelines provided. They are to be between 2,500 and 5,000 words in length.
